Local La Porte Developer Looks  to Barge Terminal
to Alleviate Container Truck Traffic
and Improve Emissions

As container truck traffic in La Porte continues to rise, local residents are growing increasingly concerned about its impact on their quality of life. The surge in heavy truck traffic has led to road congestion, noise pollution, and safety risks. Thousands of 18-wheelers pass through La Porte daily, with approximately 10,000 trucks arriving daily at the Bayport terminal alone during the peak of the COVID pandemic. As the Port of Houston expands, these issues are expected to worsen.
In response, local developers are exploring alternative solutions, including the creation of a barge terminal on the Houston Ship Channel. Advocates for this ambitious project argue that it could significantly cut the number of container trucks on local roads, potentially eliminating up to 500,000 truck trips annually. By shifting freight transport to waterways, this initiative promises to be both environmentally friendly and efficient, projecting a 1500% improvement in emissions over current levels.
“Implementing a barge terminal would not only alleviate truck traffic but also enhance the overall quality of life for local residents,” said developers Gordon Westergren, Joe Swinbank, and future project operators.
